The ever so frightening and dark history of the Salem Witch Trials we wish to never repeat again, began in the spring of 1692 and carried into 1693. During this time many people were accused and even killed out of fear of the devil. This year in Salem was a scary time for all. Not knowing whether or not they would be accused of witchcraft next. The fear of witchcraft didn't just come out of no where but were triggered by other things that might have affect their people. "The puritans, who had left England due to religious persecution, feared their religion was under attack again and worried they were losing control of their colony."("History of the Salem Witch Trials" http://historyofmassachusetts.org/the-salem-witch-trials/) On top of the fear of losing their colony they also feared diseases and the threats made by the native American tribes near them. Due to the fright they may soon be taken over they were always uneasy and frightened by anything that might come after. "...when Tituba, one of the accused witches, confessed that she and others were in fact witches working for the Devil."("History of the Salem Witch Trials" http://historyofmassachusetts.org/the-salem-witch-trials/) When this was announced that reverend hales servant tituba admitted to witchcraft it sparked the "Belief in the supernatural–and specifically in the devil’s practice of giving certain humans (witches) the power to harm others in return for their loyalty..." ("SALEM WITCH TRIALS" http://www.history.com/topics/salem-witch-trials) The witchcraft soon became a scapegoat for the other problems the town was facing. Eventually this claim made about tituba led to many other accusations made. Anything out of the normal was not seen as just that it was seen as witchcraft this was a hunt and the courts were looking out for anything suspicious amongst their people. In the book The Crucible we see multiple occasions where people have been falsely accused because of something that didn't follow the norm. But the biggest one is when Giles Corey accidentally shares that at night his wife reads books and hides these books which raised suspicion. Even though this was probably just a simple way to relax due to the fact that during this time wives had to stay home, clean and cook. Soon after he realized his mistake "I never had no wife that be so taken with books, and I thought to find the cause of it, d’y’see, but it were no witch I blamed her for. He is openly weeping. I have broke charity with the woman, I have broke charity with her. He covers his face, ashamed. (Crucible) This statement soon turned into his wife Martha Corey being taken to the trials because they thought that this was some sort of witchcraft but today it's completely normal to read books. People then didn't even realize they were turning on one and another just sharing simple secrets about each other that could lead to their death. Eventually "As the trials and executions continued, colonists began to doubt that so many people could actually be guilty of this crime. They feared many innocent people were being executed. Local clergymen began speaking out against the witch hunt and tried to persuade officials to stop the trials."("History of the Salem Witch Trials" http://historyofmassachusetts.org/the-salem-witch-trials/) These trials soon came to a halt and in the end of this the rest of the people who were left in jail and not part of the 19 whom were hanged were "...either found guilty but pardoned, found not guilty, were never indicted or simply evaded arrest or escaped from jail."("History of the Salem Witch Trials" http://historyofmassachusetts.org/the-salem-witch-trials/) These trials were an awful event created out of hysteria where innocent lives were taken. It's important to know these events today to prevent anything like this happening again.
